Perfect Order: A Collection of Short Stories

The stories in this collection have been written over the course of the past school year. I participated in a writing workshop in the fall semester that was instructed by Tom Franklin, and in which I was able to learn the importance of peer revision in the writing process. Over the spring semester, I have worked on several new stories, which are included here, as well as the stories from the writing workshop. My purpose in writing this thesis is to explore the creative process of writing and to produce original works of fiction

Distance support in-service engineering for the high energy laser

The U.S. Navy anticipates moving to a shipboard high-energy laser program of record in the fiscal year 2018 and achieving an initial operational capability by 2020. The design of a distance support capability within the high-energy laser system was expected to assist the Navy in reaching this goal. This capstone project explored the current Navy architecture for distance support and applied system engineering methodologies to develop a conceptual distance support framework with application to the high-energy laser system. A model and simulation of distance support functions were developed and used to analyze the feasibility in terms of performance, cost, and risk. Results of this capstone study showed that the implementation of distance support for the high-energy laser system is feasible and would reduce the total ownership cost over the life of the program. Furthermore, the capstone shows that moving toward the team’s recommended distance support framework will address current gaps in the Navy distance support architecture and will provide a methodology tailored to modern enterprise naval systems.http://archive.org/details/distancesupporti1094545248Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited

An evacuation model for risk analysis in Spanish road tunnels

In this paper we present EvacTunnel 3.0 an evacuation model design specifically for road tunnels. The model combines coarse network (space discretization) and a microscopic approach for modeling individual behaviors. Based on Monte Carlo methods, the model has the capability to perform multiple simulations by changing random variables of tunnel users such as pre-movement times and walking speeds. The proposed model allows the user to incorporate the effects of fire into the evacuation simulation (importing fire data/results from another model) and, therefore, predicts the number of people directly affected by the smoke (victims). Three verification cases of the proposed model are shown in this paper: 1) risk analysis application, 2) comparison with other evacuation models and 3) a real case application
